Second Hour Watches: The Best alternative to Cartier

Today I'm highlighting another Microwatch Brand, Second Hour Watches, an Australian microbrand, founded in 2019 by husband and wife duo Peter Sargison and his wife, Akira. Together they share their dreams and passions with a world for which many of the great innovations of the past have become victims of digital technology and throw away consumerism.

Peter is a former contractor in both government and corporate environments, working on technology and transformation projects, turning in midlife to teaching himself the art of watchmaking and manufacturing. (God I wish I could turn my midlife into something. Is midlife the new retirement age? Maybe I can buy a pottery wheel and tell Tuula I'm turning in my midlife, just to see her reaction). Akira brings a wealth of experience and skills through studying and working in the fashion industry.

Editor's Pick

Out of the bunch I'm going to pick out the Memoir, a series of art deco inspired dress watches. They are stunning to look at, (on the screen at least through a (reviewer channel) with a reputation that they are beautiful to wear. I'm certainly picking up some influences from Longines, and Cartier as I'm sure you are. The true beauty or should I say, the appeal of these watches is the price point. I wish I came in for the pre order price of £350. A relative steal in the grand scheme of things.

The finish and attention to detail look very considered. Much like the reviewer Peter Kotsa I too prefer tool watches (watches with functionality like chronographs, divers, pilots etc) but I do have a great appreciation for excellent quality and design.

It's a curved case which is interesting and gives it a very unique look. Both the sapphire crystal and case follow the contours of your wrist perfectly. The watch helps elevate your overall look to a to a mature and sophisticated level. The clean stitching on the straps and buckle give it an artisan feel. Like someone has put the time and effort into making this look like the best version it could be. No shortcuts. The movement is Quartz, and is shielded by a metallic case back with intricate lined-carvings. Again, attention to detail.

What a great looking watch and the specifications are fantastic. I may have to sell another watch to fund this.
