Everything You Need to Know About: Taking a Baby on Their First Flight

Taking your baby on their first flight can feel like a daunting task, but with a bit of preparation and a calm mindset, it’s an experience you and your baby can enjoy. We recently took our 3-month-old baby, Jasper, on his first flight, a two-hour journey to Portugal. Here are 10 essential tips and insights to help make your baby’s first flight as smooth as possible.

1. Family Lanes at Passport Control

Most airports now provide family lanes, allowing you to skip the long queues at passport control. These lanes are designed to help families navigate their way through the airport with greater ease. In our experience, it made the process much more manageable and significantly reduced the stress of standing in lengthy lines with a baby.

2. Airport Security May Be Slower Than You Think

While family lanes at passport control are faster, family lanes at security can be a different story. We found that airport security with a baby, buggy, and all the necessary baby items was actually slower. There are more trays to manage and more items to take care of, so prepare to allow extra time. The security staff are usually understanding, but patience is key.

3. Pack Ear Protectors

Babies can be sensitive to the changes in air pressure during takeoff and landing. We packed ear protectors for Jasper, which helped protect his ears and keep him calm. If your baby is prone to being unsettled by loud noises, ear protectors are a must-have.

4. Have Milk Ready

Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, make sure you have milk ready to go for your baby. Babies tend to swallow frequently during feeding, which can help relieve the pressure on their ears during takeoff and landing. In Jasper’s case, having his bottle ready and feeding him during these key moments made all the difference.

5. Consider a Compact Travel Stroller

A compact travel stroller like the Stokke Yoyo3, which we used on our trip to Portugal, is a game-changer. It folds easily and is lightweight, making it much easier to navigate the airport and store in overhead compartments. Plus, if your baby falls asleep, you can quickly fold the stroller without disturbing them.

6. Bring a Baby Carrier

While a stroller is useful, having a baby carrier as a backup is essential, especially during moments like boarding the plane or going through security. A baby carrier frees up your hands and helps you manage everything else, such as your bags and documents. It also keeps your baby close and comfortable, which can be soothing for them in busy airport environments.

7. Plan for Nappy Changes

Be prepared for in-flight nappy changes. Airplane toilets are cramped, so it’s best to pack a small changing mat and a compact nappy kit. Most planes have changing tables, but the space is limited, so bringing only the essentials can help. Make sure you also have a change of clothes easily accessible in case of any accidents.

8. Board Early if Possible

Airlines often allow families with young children to board early. Take advantage of this! Boarding early gives you time to settle your baby, organise your bags, and ensure everything is in place before the rest of the passengers board. It also allows you to get Jasper comfortable and ready for the flight.

9. Keep Your Baby Comfortable During the Flight

The cabin can be cool, so ensure your baby is dressed in layers to keep them warm. We made sure Jasper had an extra blanket just in case, and it was invaluable. A comfortable baby is more likely to sleep during the flight, which will make the experience easier for everyone.

10. Don’t Forget to Enjoy the Experience

It’s easy to get caught up in the planning and logistics, but don’t forget to enjoy the moment. Your baby’s first flight is a milestone, and with the right preparation, it can be a positive experience for both you and your little one. Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the journey.

By following these tips, you can ensure your baby’s first flight goes as smoothly as possible. Each flight will be a learning experience, but with the right planning, you’ll soon feel like a pro at travelling with your baby.
