ARGYLLE | NEW TRAILER & THE BIRTH OF THE VELVET GREEN DINNER JACKET

ARGYLLE | NEW TRAILER & THE BIRTH OF THE VELVET GREEN DINNER JACKET

The trailer for Argylle has dropped. Lots of heinous click-baity articles are circulating about how Henry Cavill has finally found his role as James Bond. (Yes I'm looking at you Inside the Magic). It's directed by Matthew Vaughn, who directed the Kingsman movies and produced Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. This is relevant because he has teamed up with the Costume Designer from Lock Stock Stephanie Collie.

Whilst the trailer has all the typical whizz-bang characteristics of a Vaughn movie, I wanted to look at some of the costumes that we can see and not everything is tailor made as you'd expect.

LOOK 1 - JOHN CENA

John Cena wears a Ralph Lauren Hawaiian Shirt, which has been described on an eBay listing as a Mens Red Cruise Boat Polo. It's not often you see off the peg Hawaiian shirt prints in films, although this one no longer looks to be in circulation. He is pairing those with some green out of office cargo trousers. For ease and quickness I've found some on Amazon for £35. He looks like an American Soldier on holiday.

LOOK 2 - HENRY CAVILL

Henry is listed on IMDB as Argyll and the opening set piece in the trailer, (and most likely the movie) sees him paired off in a dance with Dua Lipa. He is wearing a green velvet dinner jacket with slightly toped shoulders and a Nehru collar. A white pocket square with a simple square fold breaks the block colour. Cavill also wears it later on several other scenes in the movie which suggests this is his go-to look for the majority of the film. I've contacted the folk down at Huntsman and Campbell Carey (Creative director and head cutter) mentioned: "We made a navy suit version of this for this movie but not the velvet."

LOOK 3 - SPACE CAPSULE PET CARRIER

The comic relief I am entirely down with is the cat entombed in this bubble dome space capsule pet carrier. I've looked online and couldn't find an exact model, though suspect the design was custom made. I imagine these carriers will be all the rage once the film has been released. It's a yellow and purple argyle pattern. Had to be right?

LOOK 4 - SAM ROCKWELL

Sam Rockwell looks like he'll get a lot of screen time in this which I'm happy about. We see him on the train wearing a blue collared bomber jacket with cuffed sleeves and hem, over a green check flannel shirt. He later shaves the beard and cuts the hair and changes costume altogether. It's not a look that's designed to stand out as overtly stylish, but simultaneously he can't look too bedraggled as his hair is already doing that.

LOOK FIVE - SAMUEL L. JACKSON

Lastly we see Samuel L Jackson crop up in a light tan linen safari jacket with tortoise shell buttons, again with a Nehru collar. Only Samuel keeps it casual with a blue and white cravat tied underneath. It's a great fit and I suspect tailor made for him.

I'm really looking forward to this film, and if anyone is reading this that's involved with the marketing at all, please do get in touch. I'd love to see an advance press screening and interview the costume team.
