6 of The Best Tailoring Scenes & Moments in Movies
Today I'd like to share with you some of the best tailoring moments that I've seen in films. I'm constantly looking at suits and product placements in films, as much of my wardrobe is inspired by what I see on my favourite actors in my favourite films. So here goes.
THE INTERN (2015)
This is something of a feel good chick flick movie, but Robert De Niro is 'old school' and brings back a lot of important messaging of why one should wear a suit to the office. One stands out these days if they dress well. After all isn't that what we're all trying to do with our clothes?
CASINO ROYALE (2006)
Ok I have to have one James Bond insert here, and it's my favourite tailoring moment of any movie. The iconic Brioni Dinner suit seen in Casino Royale as Daniel Craig sizes himself in the mirror goes down as an all-time classic. For more about the clothes of James Bond I suggest the book and blog From Tailors With Love: An Evolution of Menswear Through the Bond Films.
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007)
First off I have to recommend this book on Cowboy Boots that you'll find on Amazon. Gives you all you need to know. My favourite scene about Cowboy Boots can be found in No Country For Old Men. In the department store Moss (played by Josh Brolin) asks for some
‘Larry Mahan’s, a Shoulder (Shoulder is a type of leather and ‘a style’ of Larry Mahan brand boots) size 11,’
and informs the sales assistant that white socks is all he wears. There is a playful call back when Moss comes back in the store bedraggled and half naked wearing those boots. The same assistant asks, ‘how are those Larry Mahan’s working out for you?’ (Excerpt from this article on the style of No Country For Old Men).
THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY (1999)
‘I think I’m having that too’. Matt Damon as Tom Ripley says greedily as he is being tailored in The Talented Mr Ripley (1999). According to this article "Dickie’s (Jude Law's character) favourite men’s tailor in Rome, Battistoni, is a real tailoring shop founded in 1946. It is housed in the inner-court of 61a Via Condotti."
A SINGLE MAN (2009)
‘Just get through the god damn day.’ Colin Firth as George, dressed head to toe in TOM FORD. I love the moment where he gets dressed in front of the mirror in the morning and takes us through his routine. About the style in this film: American suits would have more likely had flat fronts at this time, but the flat front goes against the story behind this suit. But it makes him look more fashionable for when the time was made. The shirt with tab collar, we’d see that in Skyfall but it started here. More about the style on this film can be found here.
MEET JOE BLACK (1998)
Anthony Hopkins' character giving Death (played by Brad Pitt) some key style lessons in Meet Joe Black. It's actually a nice scene as the old guard teaches the new guard how to tie a neck tie. But also the agreement is struck between the two in this key tailoring scene that lays out the premise for the movie.
