Sartorial Elegance: Dressing to Impress at Formal Events

Sartorial Elegance: Dressing to Impress at Formal Events

How on earth can I set myself apart when everyone looks the same at these formal events? I have some simple tips that you can follow in order to distinguish yourself at events that require you to dress appropriately.

1. Suit: If it is a formal event then chances are you don't want to take a chance on anything garish like multi-print pac-man suits. Keep it simple, a well-fitted formal suit in a classic color like black, charcoal grey, or navy is a safe choice. Ensure the suit is tailored to your measurements. One should try and opt for quality and premium. For example a bespoke dress shirt will speak volumes especially if pressed and with a personal detail. Maybe a monogram inside the cuff or some quirky cufflinks that show off your personality.

2. Tuxedo: For black-tie events, a tuxedo is required. It consists of a black jacket, black trousers, a formal white shirt, a black bowtie, and black formal shoes. Some events will allow you to wear a velvet tuxedo jacket and this would be a good option if you're looking to stand out. Please for the love of Christ learn to tie a bow tie. A fake one just makes you look like a waiter on a Cruise ship.

3. Footwear: Men should wear polished dress shoes (e.g., Oxfords) that match the colour of their suit. We should avoid converse with suits at all times. You're not Lewis Hamilton. Even if you are, Lewis, come on. You're better than that.

4. Accessories: Minimal and tasteful accessories are key. A simple tie, cufflinks, and a pocket square for men. Of course I run my own jewellery brand thanks for asking. However, I also champion some absolute cracking jewellery brands such as Thomas Sabo. See the latest Crocodile Rocks collection on my REELS now.

5. Grooming: Ensure your hair and grooming are well-maintained. Men should be clean-shaven or have a neatly trimmed beard. That said, if you do go bearded, please apply the appropriate beard oil. For value, Murdock of London cannot be beat. Anything to avoid the down and out look of Winthorpe from Trading Places when he eats a raw salmon through his santa beard on the back of a bus.

6. Colours: Stick to classic and subdued colours for formal events. Avoid overly bright or flashy colours. I think women and the gays can really get way with more in this department. Straight men are best keeping it simple, but high in quality. Try and assemble the best fabrics, the cuts, have it tailored, smell good. Shine the shoes, trim the nostril hair, order the Ubers, remember your keys. Don't check your phone every two minutes.

7. Fit: Regardless of gender, the fit of your clothing is crucial. Tailoring can make a significant difference in your overall appearance. Local dry cleaners will always do simple alterations for a modicum spend.

8. Consider the Event: If the invitation specifies a dress code (e.g., black tie, white tie, cocktail attire), adhere to it. Otherwise, inquire about the expected level of formality. Cocktail attire will allow you some latitude on the more flashier items in your wardrobe. At the risk of sounding like Alan Partridge, for that statement piece there is always Ted Baker.

9. Climate: Take the weather into account. Consider layering for colder seasons or choosing lightweight fabrics for summer events. If you're travelling and unsure what the weather is doing, take a good umbrella and leave the raincoat at home.

Always remember that it's better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed for a formal event. When in doubt, consult the event organiser or refer to the invitation for dress code details.
