2021: THE YEAR FOR MORE NATURAL CURLY HAIR?
Remember that scene in Friends when Monica got curly hair in the heat? Well how many of us are going through that right now in these crippling temperatures. During lockdown we've all grown out our hair, our beards and our bellies.
I digress. Curly hair! Yes! Is it back to stay baby? I don't know, but I can tell you the UK winner of the American Crew All-Star Challenge (on which I was a judge) had curly hair. You can't ignore the science. Here are just some male celebrities that are nailing the curly hair look.
JOE WICKS
Joe Wicks and his lustrous head of curly locks is the first man that comes to mind when I think of curly hair. There is something very every day man about Joe, and that curly hair just accentuates his playful nature and his boy next door appeal.
AIDEN TURNER
Could Bond go curly? Front runner for the next Bond actor Aiden Turner has got the Dalton-vulpine looks down. He has the six pack and the kind of intensity that can unsettle a straight man’s sexual insecurities. The unrestrained curly hair was in full plume for his latest role as the titular Leonardo Di Vinci in Amazon's Leonardo.
SETH ROGAN
The man makes his own jewellery and thanks to the latest spread in last month’s GQ has made me think about getting my own pottery wheel. You don't immediately think of Seth as an accidental style icon but any man that makes clothes look good, and feels comfortable in his own skin and hair gets my attention.
JONAH HILL
Compounding the funny guy's must have curly hair theory (that I've just made up) Jonah has an apologetic afro that has been his signature look since he burst on my radar in Superbad. Favourite performance for me is still Superbad, the penis drawing treasure chest made me laugh so hard I farted. Yet no matter how versatile his roles have been since then, Wolf of Wall Street, Moneyball, his commitment to curly hair, unlike his curly hair, is unwavering.
ANDY MURRAY
Sure I could have plucked Orlando Bloom, Hugh Grant or Henry Cavil out of the hat, but with Wimbledon round the corner I'm going to give some love to Andy Murray's twirls. You rarely get to see the bunched mop of beauty as Andy often represses it under a ball cap. Yet is there any better sight that seeing him unveil his curls at the end of a match? Victorious arms aloft, slinging his cap into the crowd, his veiny biceps that belies his wiry frame bursting through. And of course those sweaty unkempt curls matted to his sweaty crown. Ahh it just screams summer.
