Hairstyling 101: Tips and Tricks for Perfecting Your Look

Do you ever look at someone's hair and think 'wow, have you just given up on life?' I have countless time. I mean thought that about other people’s hair, not given up on life. You should count having hair as a blessing, so many people are bald as a 5 year old's bottom.  Here are some general hair styling tips that can help you achieve great results:

1. Know Your Hair Type: Understanding your hair type (straight, wavy, curly, or coily) and its unique characteristics will guide you in selecting the right products and techniques. Mine is curly and coily but I refuse to let Tuula at it with her hair straighteners. I'm all up for gender neutrality but there has to be a line in the sand when it comes to hair.

2. Use Quality Hair Products: Invest in good-quality shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that are suitable for your hair type and concerns. If only there was a blog dedicated to men's grooming. Wait hang on a moment!

3. Heat Protection: Before using heat styling tools like hairdryers, straighteners, or curling irons, apply a heat protectant spray to minimise damage. (I won't be needing to follow this particular advice, as explained above. See point one).

4. Proper Blow Drying: Use a diffuser attachment for curly hair and keep the dryer at a medium heat setting. For straight hair, point the dryer downward to avoid frizz. TIP: A good haircut should take into consideration your face shape. I'm with Latest Hairstyles on this one.

5. Avoid Overwashing: Washing your hair daily can strip it of natural oils. Depending on your hair type, you may only need to wash it every 2-3 days. By the way if you're googling 'How long can I go without washing my hair' you're not in good shape.

6. Regular Trims: Get regular haircuts to maintain healthy ends and prevent split ends from traveling up the hair shaft. TIP: Proper proportions in a haircut are essential. The length, layers, and angles should be balanced to create a harmonious and polished look. Plus you'll put some money in the local economy. Anything to stop Bezos from ruling the world.

7. Brushing: Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush with soft bristles to detangle your hair gently, especially when wet. TIP: It's important to have a consultation with a professional hairstylist. They can assess your hair and discuss your preferences and lifestyle to recommend a haircut that suits you best. It would be great if we could get free hair consultations, a bit like Check A Trader does when they send people round to quote for a bathroom refit. OK I'm definitely starting a Hair Consultation APP.

8. Less Heat Styling: Minimise the use of heat styling tools and opt for heatless styling methods like braids or buns for curls and waves. By the way if you're googling 'are man buns still trendy?' you're not in a good place.

9. Use Hair Masks: Apply deep conditioning masks or treatments to nourish and hydrate your hair once a week or as needed. Ok I'll admit I had to google hair masks, are you kidding me that's a thing? Yep, available on Amazon and it even comes in banana flavour.

10. Proper Sleep Care: Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent hair breakage while sleeping. Is that why Al Pacino asked for silk sheets at The Savoy? Ok that makes perfect sense, I just thought he was up his own arse.

Hairstyles that are considered the "best" can be highly subjective and often depend on personal preferences and trends. A good haircut is one that enhances your overall appearance and complements your individual style and features. Remember that what makes a haircut "good" can vary from person to person, so it's essential to find a style that aligns with your unique attributes and preferences. Professional hairstylists can provide valuable guidance in achieving a haircut that suits you best.
