TEMPUR® WHAT IS SLEEP ERGONOMICS AND WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF POOR SLEEP?
*This sponsored post was created in collaboration with TEMPUR®
I once heard that whilst you sleep, your brain is indexing all the data that it soaked up during the waking hours and is now systematically indexing that data. Imagine a librarian with a huge trolley of returned books, that need to be housed in their correct place ready for people to view, read and potentially hire out the next day. Without enough sleep the librarian doesn't have sufficient time to fill her shelves and gaps start appearing.
Now instead of books, think of the librarian being an archivist for your memories. Each book contains data that you have collected, and your conscious mind is now trying to connect these with your subconscious so that when you need to recall information, you can do automatically. If when you go to fetch one of these books and it's not there, your subconscious and your conscious mind no longer have a shorthand. And consequently, you simply forget things.
Now please take all the above with a pinch of salt. I'm not a scientist of sleep, nor have I extensively researched the effects of sleep deprivation to consider myself an authority on the subject. However, I think we can all attest to having that fogginess of the mind when we haven't had a decent night’s sleep. Everything becomes a lot harder. Every task requires more effort. Your body doesn’t shut down when you sleep. The night is a regenerative time where our bodies are mending and rejuvenating so that when we wake up, we feel refreshed and ready to take on the day. Would a memory foam mattress help?
Personal Sleep Experience During Lockdown
After months of restless sleep during Lockdown, I've had to make some adjustments to my pattern. I tried some simple common tricks like no caffeine after 4pm. Using a soft mattress topper and spraying my pillows with various lavender mists. These were small tweaks that made little to no improvement. I've tried also compiling some meditation playlists, but then my headphones get tangled as I toss and turn and nothing really works out the way it's intended.
But then again, I've got Tuula with me now. And Charlie also doesn't like being left out, so he sleeps with us. There simply hasn't been enough room for all of us. To compound the issue, when either one of us toss and turn, the motion disturbs the other and now none of us are getting quality sleep. Except Charlie. He snores like a beaut.
Proper body positioning, or Sleep Ergonomics, that support your back and neck alignment are so important. It can help us rest in a safe mechanical position or stress our joints to the point that we wake up with more aches and pains than we fell asleep with.
For anyone following my Instagram stories you'll notice I've been doing some renovations at home. Repainting the main bedroom and study. And Tuula and I have invested in some new furniture, namely a new bed stand. Although we haven't yet pulled the trigger on buying a new mattress.
One company that I'm currently interested in is TEMPUR®.
TEMPUR
TEMPUR® mattress material is used to make mattresses and pillows that evenly distribute weight and pressure, ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep. Your mattress and pillow should allow your body to rest in a physiologically natural position and recover from the strain it has accumulated during the day. This means that the pillow and mattress should adequately support the natural curves and shape of the spine so that the muscles can relax.
This is a brand that has heritage, it has the science and a respectable score on Trust Pilot after 917 reviews. Could this be the answer to our sleep-deprived prayers? Or should I just buy 3 separate beds for all of us and call it a life? (Joking. Maybe).
