The Boating Jacket - Outfit of the Day - Tis the Season
Article by guest author Peter Brooker
When and where can I wear a boating suit and get away with it? Sure if you live on the lake then you can get away with wearing just about anything. (PS - That's not me by the way, I just happened to be passing a lake that day).
Firstly, I think I've invented the term "boating suit." I've been looking around online and all I can find is a boating jacket. Which is really just a halfway house. Sure you can wear the jacket, which is normally thick stripes in contrast colours, and pair them with some neutral chinos and call it a life. But can you wear thick striped jackets and matching trousers? The one remark I got while wearing this suit was from a gentleman who poked his head out of a window to tell me, "that's one hell of an outfit buddy."
It's certainly a summer look. You'll definitely get some stares, and potentially you could just irritate people with its garishness. These people hate dogs by the way. It's the same kind of person I'm convinced.
For me, you shouldn't hold back on wearing a boating jacket. It has a collegiate look to it, which can offer a certain youthfulness, a playfulness, you get the picture. I decided to pair this look with a cartoon graphic, which is the only time I can say I'm comfortable wearing a tee with a suit. Personally when I see celebs on the Red Carpet in the suit and tee get up, (here's looking at you Ryan Gosling) I just ask the good Lord, in the name of all things David Beckham, why?
This look is further accentuated with a Panama hat, one of which is high quality purchased on my travels around Panama. The sunglasses I've borrowed from my wife. She's into some crazy 80s sunglass phase.
To finish the look I'm just going casual with my white Reeboks. They're fairly new so they look crisp enough to stay in the casual look theme. My only regret with this photo is that I didn't bring my decent TOM FORD sunglasses. Everything else is fine, but the glasses are just too much.
As Spring is round the corner you might be looking to get a boating jacket, especially if you're heading to the Henley Royal Regatta as seen in the Social Network. It might be a way out, 1st July, but better to book ahead before it sells out.
Here are a couple of brands for you to look at, I won't hyperlink as it looks spammy. But just Google the names and tell them I sent you.
