Stepping Up Your Shoe Game: Finding the Perfect Footwear for Every Outfit
Choosing the right footwear to match your outfit involves considering factors like the formality of the occasion, the colour and style of your clothes, and your personal style. But rules are made to be broken. Just look at Lewis Hamilton wearing sneakers on the red carpet. Not that I approve of this kind of flagrant casualisation of formality, but he is my boy so he can do whatever the hell he pleases. Plus people simply don't like wearing dress shoes to big events any more. They want to feel comfortable. You might ask, if I'm paying a £1000 for a pair of sneakers, aren't they more upmarket than a pair of faux leather dress shoes say from Base London? Interesting point Carl, thank you reader. But let's kick off with formality shall we, topping the list of general guidelines to help you make the right choice:
1. Formality: Match the formality of your footwear to the occasion. So can you wear trainers to a red carpet event? Well that's up to you. If you're always on red carpets you may look to shake things up a bit. But I don't get on the red carpet often so I enjoy dress shoes when I'm there. Formal events usually require dress shoes like oxfords or loafers, while casual settings might allow for sneakers, boat shoes, or even sandals.
2. Colour Coordination: Choose footwear that complements the colours in your outfit. Neutrals like black, brown, white, and grey are versatile and can work with a range of outfits. I've always found blue and navy quite tricky to pair, as I don't like to block colour my blue denim with blue polos and blue trainers. It's a bit f*cking dull isn't it? Blue trainers and suede shoes do work well with blue cork belts however. For bold or colourful outfits, consider neutral or complementary tones.
3. Style Consistency: Try to maintain a consistent style between your footwear and the overall outfit. If you're wearing a tuxedo for a wedding, opt for dress shoes. If you're wearing jeans and a casual shirt, sneakers or casual boots might be more appropriate. I have a real bug bear seeing black dress shoes with torn denim. Why? Simply explain to me why?
4. Proportions: Consider the proportions of your outfit. Slim-fitting trousers or chinos might work better with sleeker shoes, while wider-legged pants can be paired with bulkier shoes. Try not to go too Elton with those
5. Season: Take the weather into account. Boots are great for colder months, while sandals and lighter shoes are better suited for warmer weather. Knowing the different kind of boot comes in handy. I'll get into that later. And knowing the terminology for different kind of sandals, beach wear will also get you out of a jam. For example, Boat shoes are great for activities near water, such as boating or beach outings. Espadrilles on the other hand are ideal for casual beach days, picnics, and strolls.
6. Occasion: Different occasions call for different footwear. Athletic shoes are suitable for the gym but you want to make sure that if you're prioritising cardio over lifts, then you'll want a trainer that can support your foot adequately. You can also shop for plastic insoles that will support the arc of your foot. Highly recommend, and quite inexpensive.
7. Comfort: Prioritise comfort, especially if you'll be on your feet for an extended period. Look for footwear with appropriate cushioning and support. I think men have this in the bag. Women on the other hand need to knock it off with the constant high heels for every occasion. You'll really bugger up your feet over time and we men have to hear your endless droning about your blisters. Cry me a river, wear comfy shoes and stop trying to be 3 inches taller than us.
8. Experiment: Don't be afraid to experiment and try different combinations. Sometimes unexpected pairings can create unique and stylish looks. I once wore different coloured converse to a gig, and pulled as a result. Oh wait, did she wear different coloured converse? I can't remember, but it was an opener, and I definitely did pull.
9. Classic Choices: If you're unsure, classic choices like loafers, brogues, and sneakers can often work well with a variety of outfits. If you're in London then these are the best shops for men's shoes. Grenson's, Crockett and Jones, Trickers, John Lobb, Church's. To name a few.
10. Personal Style: Ultimately, your personal style should shine through. Choose footwear that resonates with your fashion preferences and makes you feel confident. But remember always seek constructive criticism and avoid chewing gum on pavements on hot days. They can wreck a pair of shoes in minutes.
Remember that fashion rules can be flexible, and personal style plays a significant role. Trust your instincts, and don't hesitate to ask for the opinions of friends or family if you're uncertain about a footwear choice.
