Givenchy Gentleman Society | New Fragrance Review
You may have seen on my Instagram stories that I attended the UK launch of the Givenchy Fragrance, Gentleman Society. I came away with a goody bag which had the latest fragrance inside, which was very generous.
Gentleman Society is a flanker to the original that was released in 2017. They've been flanking for a few years now. Givenchy flank every year and some would say they are the best flankers in the business,
Gentleman Society is a woody aromatic fragrance for men, it comes in EDP concentration and retails for £101.50 for 100ml bottle and a 60ml bottle will set you back £79.
Gentleman Society goes off the beaten path in a sense because they have omitted the iris note that all the others are centred around.
The box comes in a nice metallic mirrored finish on the front and back, and the sides has a gloss blank branding.
The bottle is modern with an opaque glass which is painted on the inside. There is an enlarged chrome accent on the front which gives it real presence on the shelf. There's certainly no missing it when you walk past it in the bathroom. Unless of course Tuula has hidden it behind all her make up bags like all girls do in bathrooms. Why are women the worst in bathrooms? And why as men, if we ever bring it up, we get yelled at and then they bring up something completely benign like that time we went to a strip club on a stag do in Prague and got blackmailed out of £10k? Back to the fragrance.
The atomiser is one of immense quality and satisfaction and that leads us to the note breakdown.
TOP: Cardamom and sage. HEART NOTES: French narcissus, Haitian Vetiver, Madagascar Vetiver. BASS NOTES: Vanilla, Cedar and Palo Santo.
Initial thoughts
The opening feels very vibrant and young. As a man no longer in his twenties, I felt a little old all of a sudden. Like I'd just got dragooned into going to one of those horrible student house parties where everyone is smoking weed and playing N64 Goldeneye. But then I relaxed into it, and started to unclench. My shoulders dropped, and I took comfort in some of my life choices. Like getting the patio done in time for Spring. Not buying a season ticket to watch Crystal Palace. Those kind of things. After there was a blast of spiciness with the cardamom and sage, which brought some grounded maturity to the scent.
Dry down
As a Match of the Day pundit would say, this is a scent of two halves. The opening is very saccharin and the dry down is a leathery aroma with a hint of smokiness
It's like the Gentleman Society has come through a smoky haze like Stars in their Eyes and reveals itself through the dry ice. It then starts singing a couple of lines and the audience erupts. It still feels quite toned down compared to its contemporaries. It's not as boisterous as the other flankers.
Gentleman Society us a versatile fragrance with a soft spoken charm and elegant character. It's perfect for the office as it doesn't look to fill the room like a Penn Gillette one man juggling act. It's not complex enough to be a black tie fragrance, but will be perfect for a first date, or a casual date depending on how promiscuous you are.
I got some nice compliments from some of my friends who asked me if I was wearing the new Givenchy Gentlemen Society. It felt like cheating as we were at the same launch party for Givenchy Gentlemen Society, but still. I got some decent projection but not enough to make it over a kitchen counter. I'd say there were some presence of the scent on my wrists for around 6 hours or so.
