I've Gone Vegan Until Christmas Day!
I'm trying something new for the next 6 weeks, I'm going Vegan until Christmas day. If anyone has seen The Game Changers on Netflix then you'll understand why.
The Game Changers tells the story of James Wilks, elite Special Forces trainer and The Ultimate Fighter winner, as he travels the world on a quest to uncover the optimal diet for human performance.
Showcasing elite athletes, special ops soldiers, visionary scientists, cultural icons, and everyday heroes, what James discovers permanently changes his understanding of food and his definition of true strength.
In a nutshell (you know how I like nutshells) Wilks picked up an injury that saw him side-lined from training for 6 months. In that time he dug deep into what foods could accelerate his recovery. But he fell down the rabbit hole and embarked on a five-year quest for the Truth in Nutrition, modelled after Bruce Lee's Truth in Combat philosophy: "Research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is specifically your own.”
If you haven't checked it out you should definitely do so.
On a personal note I've also been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and high cholesterol. Don't worry, the doctors have assured me that I'll still live forever which is a welcome relief. However, I'm coming into that age where my body needs as much help as it can get.
More and more friends my age are also announcing health issues, cancer. There's also the environment to think about.
Has anyone noticed that the media are very quick to derail those who are at the forefront of climate change? If you see Greta Thunberg do a speech, it quickly gets spun into a meme or gag on Facebook.
If Emma Thompson gets on a megaphone at an Extinction Rebellion event she gets chastised for flying first class. More recently Lewis Hamilton was called a hypocrite. How can he be a spokesperson for change when he works in an industry that is some distance to becoming carbon neutral. A great video by Russell Brand recently defended him calling this a display of impotence in modern culture.
"Can we do anything as individuals?" Brand queries. "Say I stopped used plastic bottles, or don't go on flights? What difference does that make?"
We have to have global regulation. Say if it's illegal to use single use plastic, or fuels damaging to the planet. The consequences of this will be too huge. It will be difficult to make an abrupt change."
Mark Fisher once said 'its easier to envisage the end of the world than it is the end of capitalism'.
In other words we can also see nuclear war easier than McDonalds not being allowed to sell burgers in every town.
I've been recommended this book below and I will be getting it to help with my Vegan journey between here and Christmas.
It's called How Not to Die. If anyone else has any other recommendations please leave a comment below. *I am an Affiliate member and will get a commission if you buy this book.
